Spread betting doesn’t fall under the UKGC regulation. Then there’s pool betting (when winners share the pot), which is really popular around racecourses and sports events. You’ve got fixed-odds bookmakers and betting exchanges (peer-to-peer with commission on winnings). When it comes to sports betting, there are a few ways you can engage with this activity. Another thing to keep in mind is that UK online operators must partner with GAMSTOP (the UK’s free national self-exclusion system for online gambling). You are legally capped at betting £5 per spin if you’re 25 or older, and just £2 per spin if you’re aged 18–24.

Additionally, games can no longer celebrate ‘losses disguised as wins’ (where animations cheer for a win that is actually smaller than your stake). It’s not just about the payouts, it’s about how the game plays. As for A-category gaming machines (unlimited stakes and prizes), these are completely banned by the UKGC. Remote betting on UK horse racing will be excluded from the new duty rate, as will any bets placed via self-service betting terminals on licenced premises, and these will instead remain chargeable at a rate of 15%. The new duty rate of 25% for remote betting will be chargeable on profits from remote betting from 1 April 2027 onwards. Consequently, the government will not proceed with introducing a Remote Betting and Gaming Duty rate, and will instead introduce changes that retain a differential between rates on remote betting and gaming duties. The government will therefore implement a lower tax rise for remote betting than remote gaming, while keeping General Betting Duty at 15%. Bets placed via self-service betting terminals on licenced betting premises will not be treated as being placed remotely and will remain subject to the 15% rate for general bets.
